How an old friendship, an honest conversation, and a little-known investment led to a new client — and a new appreciation for municipal bonds.

Not long ago, one of our advisors reconnected with a friend he hadn't seen in several years. What started as a casual catch-up over coffee turned into something neither of them expected. The friend shared that he anticipated coming into a significant sum of money over the next few years. His mindset was straightforward: he had no issue paying his fair share of taxes, but wanted to know if there were smarter, more tax-efficient ways to invest.

He also needed help with business structure and wanted introductions to trusted professionals in tax strategy and LLC formation. Those referrals were easy — that's what a strong network is for. But then the conversation shifted to investments, and that's where things got interesting.

Our advisor brought up tax-free municipal bonds. The friend had never explored them before, so our advisor walked him through a real-world example using a bond recently recommended to another client. He watched his friend's eyes light up. It's rare to see someone get so immediately excited about municipal bonds — though our advisor will admit he's always had a soft spot for them himself. "When can we get started? I have money ready to invest right now."

Just like that, a casual catch-up became the beginning of a new client relationship. They worked through the details, opened an account, and when the right bond came to inventory, there was a genuinely exciting phone call to make. His first tax-free individual bond. As our advisor's daughter likes to point out, munis don't generate the same buzz as debating Amazon versus Apple or chasing the next IPO. Fair enough. But excitement is in the eye of the beholder.

For the right investor — someone focuses on after-tax income and capital preservation — the moment you show them what a tax-free yield means for their bottom line, the room changes. You never know where a conversation will lead. Sometimes the most impactful client relationships don't start in a boardroom — they start over coffee.

This is a hypothetical situation based on real life examples. Municipal bonds are subject to availability and change in price. They are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rates rise. Interest income may be subject to the alternative minimum tax. Municipal bonds are federally tax-free but other state and local taxes may apply.  If sold prior to maturity, capital gains tax could apply
